Hi Clayton,

Graham Holton told me about your website, and asked me to look into one or two discrepancies between your site and his. I told him what I thought was correct but had to admit some points couldn't be readily verified - whether it's Rose or Rosa Barnard Hicks, for instance! Anyway, having looked at your site I've found a few other things as well so here are my comments for you to act on as you see fit.

http://www.esgar.com/genealogy/pafg03.htm#32
It says Mary Louise Hicks was born on 16 June 1873. She was my father's mother and was actually born on 15 June. She died on 3 May 1967. I don't have her Birth Certificate but I'm convinced 15 June is correct; I've never seen 16 June in any document.

It says Hollis Clayton was born in 1869. He was my father's father and was born on 7 February 1880. He died on 11 April 1965.

http://www.esgar.com/genealogy/pafg03.htm#270 and
http://www.esgar.com/genealogy/pafg03.htm#34
both say Hollis Clayton was born about 1881. See last comment.

It says Dorothy Anne Hicks was born on 11 April 1882. I have a copy of a birthday book which belonged to Janet Hicks, one of Dorothy's elder sisters. It was copied for me in longhand a few years ago by Janet Hick's grandson, Christopher Johnson. It gives Dorothy's DOB as 21 April 1883. My third cousin John Cooper (descended from Herbert Timperley Hick's wife's sister, Emma Archer) gives the same date and assures me it's correct.

It says Rosa Barnard Hicks died on 28 July 1928. According to John Cooper she actually died on 28 July 1972. One of her elders sisters, Kate Ellen Hicks, died in 1928, so that might account for that date. JC believes his date is correct and says it probably came from Anne Toole (nee Lyster) He says that unfortunately Anne had a serious stroke earlier this year and he doesn't know her current state of health.

Agnes Esther Hicks. Janet Hicks gives her birthday as 27 March 1876. It seems strange that Janet would have the wrong date for her sister's birthday but then she did have ten sisters! It's also possible that Christopher Johnson copied it wrongly. Agnes died on 6 January 1943 according to John Cooper.

On the same page, Percy LaVerne Maxon was born on 30 January 1879 according to John Cooper. He married Edith on 6 November 1901 according to their granddaughter, Patricia Remer (nee Maxon). I haven't corresponded directly with Patricia. It was Anne Toole who gave me the information a few years ago. Just to add confusion, John Cooper has their wedding as 6 March 1901.

On the same page, Richard Clay was born in 1864. This date comes from a book entitled "Clays of Bungay" by James Moran. I have his wedding date as 11 July 1907 but cannot find any reference to it on the book.

Best regards,
John Clayton

Hi Clay,

Enjoyed your web page found through the Rooksbridge site.

My husband's 6 x great grandfather is William ISGAR (ESGAR?)

From your web page -
William Esgar was born in 1697 in Whitehouse, East Brent, Somerset, England. He died in Mar 1719. He was buried in St Mary's Cem., East Brent, Somerset, England. He married Mrs. May Esgar.

I believe that I have found his marriage - courtesy of the Somerset & Dorset FHS marriage index

" William ISGAR of E Brent, Bride Mary EDWARDS of S Brent, married on 22 MAY 1716 at parish Cossington "

The name Mary can often be misread as May and the dates all fit beautifully but why Cossington - it's anybody's guess.

My husband's line comes down through Robert & Jane through their youngest daughter, Mary born in 1761 who married a John EDWARDS on 21 March 1782 at East Brent Parish Church, Somerset.

There might be a connection between the EDWARDS?

Hope you find this interesting.

Pat
