Robert was undoubtedly at the Battle of Hastings. He was singled out forpraise by William of Poitiers. He descended from Thorold de Pontaudemerand a sister of Gunnor, Duchess of Normandy, either Aveline or Wevie. Hesucceeded his father Roger, as Lord of Pontaudemer and Beaumont inNormandy, and his maternal uncle as Count of Meulan in France, and wascreated Earl of Leicester by henry I. From his elder son Waleran, Countof Meulan, descended several Norman lines, whist the second son Robert,Earl of Leicester, was grandfather of Robert, 4th Earl of Leicester whodied without issue in 1204.
