Charles Hicks

Took over Great Holland Hall in 1829 from his father. Previous to thishe had been farming from 1823 - 1829 at Dairy House farm on the otherside of the village, as of 1800. After 1829 this was taken over by hisyounger brother Thomas Hicks. During Charles' time at the hall he wasChurchwarden for many years and later paid for the building of the ChurchPorch when the church was rebuilt in 1865-66. He kept an interestingdiary of his life which was published in the Eastern Counties Advertiser.

In 1864 the Hall passed to his son Charles Thompson Hicks.


Thomas Hicks

Took over Dairy House farm in 1829 when his older brother moved fromthere to take over Great Holland Hall.

Took over the Hall in 1864 from his father. The hall probably dates fromthe time of its sale away from the manor in the mid 1700s. The fronthalf of the building was altered by Charles Hicks in 1839 when he rebuiltthe front wall and front half of the roof. It appears today (2000) muchas it did in 1839.

On his death it passed to the husband of his youngest sister, Helen Hicks(married to Frederick William Baker.)

Upon his death his widow presented a brass collection plate to All Saintschurch in his memory. The inscription reads "In memory of my husbandCharles Thompson Hicks - 2nd Novemebr 1892." This plate was still in useevery Sunday in 1999.


Lilian Martha Smith

Sister of G. Thompson-Smith, solicitor and Mayor of Colchester 1899 -1900.

In 1909 Lilian laid one of 2 foundation satones at the New Village Hallon 26th June. Her daughter, Mrs. A M Bull was a trustee of the Villagehall and Institute from 1909 - 1933.


William Blake

Took over Great Holland Hall and estate on the death of his wife'sbrother, Charles Thompson Hicks.


Albert Hicks

1881 census - also living with family -Rosa E. A. Berlane - niece, bornin Stock, Essex, a teacher.


Mrs. Elizabeth Hicks

name changed from Elizabeth to Mrs Elizabeth Hicks
