Stratford St Mary in 1844 (White's Suffolk Directory) - a pleasant wellbuilt village on the North bank of the river Stour 10 miles south ofIpswich. It contains 647 souls and 1432 acres of fertile and well woodedland, several handsome houses, 4 good inns and several shops. There is alarge corn mill on the Stour partly worked by steam.
In 1900 there were still 4 pubs!

Tomb inscription reads:
Sacred to the memory of Henry Will Hicks, eldest son of Henry and AnnHewes Hicks of the hall of this parish, who died Nov 24th 1853 aged 30years. Also of Catherine Ann his affectionate wife who died July 17th1854 aged 25 years leaving 5 orphan children to lament their loss. Alsoof Maria Louisa who died in infancy. Also Edward Henry eldest son of theabove who died Feb 18th 1864 aged 15 years.
