Sarah Timperley

Timperleys were Lords of the manor of Hintlesham until 1720 when the halland estate were sold. They were closely connected with the families ofMowbray and Howard Duke of Norfolk.

In a way Sarah was heiress of the large estates of her ancestors, through her father who was the 'young squire's" uncle. But the youngsquire had dsinherited the uncle and his sons. Sarah was the only childof the eldest son of the young squire's uncle and next heir. Probablythe young squire had died without issue. Her ancestor, John Timperleyhad bought the manor in 1454. Had the Timperleys been granted a peerageinheritable in the female line as well as in the male line, she wouldhave been a peeress in her own right.

Sarah was buried in Hintlesham in 1829. In the south part of thechurchyard, south of the east wall of the church's south aisle, stands alarge coffin tomb between double headstone and double foot stoneinscribed:

John Hicks, late of Stratford S. Mary's, farmer, and formerly of thisparish, 7 July 1818 aged 73; Sarah, wife of said John Hicks, formerly ofthis parish, 16 March 1829 aged 82; Elizabeth, 2nd daughter of above, andrelict of Marven Porter, formerly of this parish, 30 Aug 1852 aged 76.

Other Hicks headstones are adjoining.
