Former Extension Agent Awarded Distinguished Service AwardFORT COLLINS - Mrs. Connie Gamble, extension home economist for Fremont and Custer Counties and formerly extension agent for Prowers County, has been awarded the 1970 Distinguished Service Award of the Colorado Extension Home Agents' Association.
The award was made Oct. 29 during ceremonies at the 36th annual meeting of the National Association of Extension Home Economists in Milwaukee, Wis.
Mrs. Gamble received the award for her more than 13 years of dedicated work as a staff member in Colorado State University's Cooperative Extension Service. During that time she has served in Prowers County and the San Luis Valley as well as in her current position.
The home economist has been cited in particular for her work with the matron at the Colorado Woman's Correctional Institution, Canon City, in planning rehabilitation work for inmates. She was responsible for developing a personal sewing class there and also helped with style reviews and special programs which the women planned.
Mrs. Gamble managed to overcome such problems in classes as the inmates' wide range of age and social background, various amounts of schooling and differing lengths of sentence. Over a period of time she trained the matron to conduct sewing classes herself.
Mrs. Gamble also has taught courtesy and manners classes for men at the preparole center in Canon City.Throughout her years of service, Mrs. Gamble has emphasized programs for young homemakers and 4-H youth.
Her objectives, she says have been to reach homemakers with workshops and information they need anc to help young people do more and better jobs in all activities available to them in the county.
Currently, she is responsible for programs in nine extension homemakers clubs (160 women) and in 27 4-H clubs (450 youth).
In speaking of the home agent's job, Mrs. Gamble said, "We try to promote new ideas where they will lighten the load, and we try to help people be at home in the world."
Mrs. Gamble received a B.S. degree in home economics in 1936 and an M.A. degree in extension education in 1964, both from CSU. She also attended a summer Family Life Seminar in 1965 at Oregon State University, Corvallis.
Her professional affiliations include the National Association of Extension Home Economists and the American Home Economics Association.
